The Man Wearing Rags and The Law of Conservation of Happiness

I had parked my car outside the police station. It was no parking area but the man sitting under the tree said,

That man was wearing rags having patches all over his clothing to conceal the torn areas. He seemed to have nothing and might have lost everything. I wondered how can people be so careless in life to be reduced to such pathetic condition. Anyway, reluctantly I parked the car as close to the wall of the police station as possible and went inside for the meeting for which I drove 300 km to attend.

My meeting with ACP was a failure. I was told police cannot help me as my case involved people who had huge political backings. It took 2 minutes for the gentleman to end the meeting for which I drove 5 long hours in the scorching heat.

I came out of the police station with miserable look on my face. The only relief was that my car was still there. I sat in car and was about to switch on the ignition, I saw that man sitting under the tree and having food. I could see the relief on his face. I got out of the car and extended a 20 Rs. Note towards him.

“ये क्या है साब?” he said with emotionless face.

I had expected him to grab the alms immediately. But his refrain confused me. And somehow without any thought I uttered,

He asked.

I said dejectedly.

He continued having his food.

The more I wanted not to engage any conversation with him, the more I was getting into it.

I bounced back.

He asked while having his last morsel of food.

I was so frustrated by now that I wasn’t even bothered to wonder how a man wearing rags can talk about science to me.

Energy can neither be created nor destroyed it can only be transformed from one form to another| पर इसका दुआ और सुख से क्या ?” I said.

I was almost loosing my patience with him now.

But what followed next was nothing less than a revelation. He took the note from my hand, smiled back and said,

He stood up, started walking away and soon was lost in the crowd. I could no longer see him. But I still remember his shabby looks, ragged clothes with coloured patches to conceal the torn and worn out areas and probably now I know the reason for it as well.
