Another Round is a 2020 Danish black-comedy-drama film internationally coproduced bteween Denmark, Sweden, and the Netherlands. It’s a unique blend of drama and black humour. Directed by Thomas Winterberg and starring Mads Mikkelsen, the film explores the drinking problem and its effect on the lives of four middle-aged friends.
The story revolves around a group of high school teachers who are stuck in a state of stagnation and disillusionment. Feeling stuck in everyday life, they embarked on an experiment inspired by a philosopher’s theory that humans are naturally alcohol deficient at 0.05%. They decided to maintain a constant high level throughout the day to see if it would bring them the happiness and creativity they thought they lacked. Their lives change drastically as they delve deeper into the experiments they have imposed on themselves. They experience moments of joy, unbridled confidence, and increased motivation. But they also face the effects of excessive drinking, including strained relationships, professional setbacks, and personal tragedies. The film explores the complexities of alcoholism, the social acceptance of alcohol, and the fine line between control and addiction.
Mads Mikkelsen gives an impressive performance as the protagonist Martin, his own demon-fighting history teacher. His acting is nuanced and compelling, capturing the character’s journey from despair to self-discovery. The film’s ensemble cast, including Thomas Bo Larsen, Magnus Millan, and Lars Lante, also do a great job, adding depth and authenticity to their roles.
