Me and my wife watched a wonderful play, many days back, Barff, which starred Saurabh Shukla (also written and directed by), Sadiya Siddiqui, and Sunil Kumar Palwal. It was set up in Kashmir, and a story of one snowy night. To be honest, I saw Saurabh Shukla’s face on the play’s poster in a newspaper, and we decided to go ahead with the plan the next day. It was a surreal experience, and all cast members performed stupendously.

But what I took from the play was the one particular event which happened once the play ended. As customary in plays, the cast and crew is introduced. Once Saurabh Shukla ji (I just could not write only the name here) came on the stage, there was an expected thunderous clap. Then the person doing the announcement said that Saurbah Ji will now pick up a lucky draw and present the award to the winner. I expected the senior artist who has done countless plays and films, to just do the formality and leave.
But when the winner was arriving on stage and was crossing the set props, Saurabh ji said,
Sambhal ke ayiega, udhar khayi hai !
(Please come carefully, there is a ditch there),
A line used many times in the play! I was stumped. His enthusiasm to engage with the audience once the play has ended, even at this stage of his career, showed his hunger and passion for his work, which just mesmerized me. That one incident is now etched in my sub-consciousness and writing about it is the least bit of gratitude I could offer to the respected artist.
