In transit

The civilization across the bank slept.
The moon glimmered and stared at the river.
After a while, the river looked up and smiled.
The breeze nodded. The moon smiled back.

“It’s too still. Is this the end?” asked the river.
“It’s not,” said the moon. “You’re still in flow.”
“There’s no one around.”
“Our journey continues—even in solitude.”
“I see nothing outside.”
“And within?”
“A whirlpool.”

Silence. Breeze. A bend.

“Do you think I’ll return to my origin? Where it all began?”
“You won’t.”
“Then where does it all end?”
“You already know.”
“Is this all I’m meant for? To start in tranquility and end in chaos?”
“Everyone is. Some sooner. Some later. But everyone.”
“Nothing beyond?”
“Look around. You’ve already created your beyond.”

Drizzle. Downpour. Another bend.

The river splashed against a rock and wondered,
“Is this my beyond? A sleeping civilization?
The endless cycle—faith, birth, life, and death?”

She asked the clouds that veiled the moon:
“How far is the sea?”
“Farthest, if you feel. Nearest, if you know.”
“Know?”
“That You are the sea,”
hummed the clouds.

“But the moon said I’m in transit.”
“It was right. You are the sea, in transit.”
“In transit to where?”
“To the sea.”
“From self to self?”
“As always.”
“When will I arrive?”
“You already have. You just don’t believe it yet.”
“But who are you?”
“The Sea,”
the clouds smiled.

“This is a dichotomy!”
“It is.”
“It’s duality.”
“It is.”
“Then what’s the truth?”
“The duality. The dichotomy. And all that lies between.”
“That can’t be. Truth must be singular.”
“Which bank of yours is true? And which is false?”
“Both banks define me,” the river chuckled.

“You—the in-between.
Duality and dichotomy define the in-between.
And the in-between defines you.”

The river looked ahead.
Her moment of truth—the Sea.
And in thunderous ecstasy,
the river and the sea embraced.

The small stream that started in the mountains—
flowed through plains, cities,
lives, deaths, gods, boats, floods,
sand, rocks, sorrow, joy, and remorse—
finally understood and believed:
“I am the Sea.
I was and will always be.”
