Children of Heaven is a 1997 Iranian family drama film. It is written and directed by Majid Majidi. It was nominated for the Academy Award in the category, Best Foreign language Film in 1998.
The story revolves around siblings Ali and Zahra who make an arrangement so that their parents do not find about the lost shoe of Zahra.
The movie begins by Ali accidently loosing a shoe of Zahra while running an errand. The siblings who come from a poor background devise a plan to wear Ali’s sneakers to school, Zahra in the morning and Ali in the afternoon. This arrangement helps the kids hide their secret while their parents are already struggling for basic survival.
As the story progresses, the movie beautifully captures the daily struggles the children face. Their unwavering love for each other, determination and resilience help them overcome the challenges faced. The film showcases their innocent and joyful spirits and strong sibling bond despite all odds.
One day, Ali comes across a race at the school whose third prize is a pair of sneakers. He comes home happy and assures his little sister that he will win the race at third position and get her a new pair of shoes. Ali wins the race, comes first and is crying as he lost the opportunity to get his sister a new pair of sneakers.
The simplicity and authenticity make the film extraordinary. Every frame is a beautiful portray of innocence. It provides a glimpse of daily struggles of the downtrodden class of Iran. The cinematography captures the essence of Tehran, showcasing its crowded streets, lively neighborhoods, and the stark contrasts between wealth and poverty.
